  3. Dave on his diving boat on a bright sunny day in Dave the Diver.

It's been nearly two years since Dave the Diver first surfaced, immediately dazzling the world with his distinctive underwater exploration/sushi restaurant management charms, but developer Mintrocket isn't done yet; the studio has now confirmed a story expansion is on the way, and perhaps even spin-off games for each of Dave's pals.

  4. A screenshot from the Vampire Survivors: Ode to Castlevania DLC animated trailer, showing a character standing in Dracula's cavernous hall and reaching out his hand.

The Castlevania collaborations keep on coming! Having already made appearances in the likes of Dead Cells, Dead by Daylight, and V Rising, it's now Vampire Survivors turn to meld minds with Konami's classic platform series; developer Poncle's acclaimed minimalist survival RPG is joining in on the Castlevania fun - while still somehow managing to remain doggedly vampire-free - with a massive new paid expansion launching on Halloween.

  6. DF Weekly: Xbox's new 6nm processor emphasises the console price challenges to come

Digital Foundry | DF Weekly: Xbox's new 6nm processor emphasises the console price challenges to come

A smaller, cheaper, more efficient chip - but any cost reductions don't make their way to the customer.

"Series X 6nm! YESSSSSS! We found it!" Not my words, but the excited exclamations of Austin Evans, with a brand-new video that tears down the new disc-less edition of the Xbox Series X, revealing what's generally believed to be the first major console revision for Microsoft since 2020. It's an interesting contrast with Sony, who have revised the PlayStation 5 annually, moving to a 6nm processor way back in 2022 and delivering a further-revised 'Slim' edition a year later. 6nm silicon brings with it apparent cost-reductions and efficiency improvements - but this is no game-changing update in the way it was with the Xbox One S and the PS4 Slim. In concert with a $599 Xbox Series X 2TB, a $449 disc-less Series X and a $699 PlayStation 5 Pro, the days of console cost-reductions are clearly over and the whole nature of what next-gen will actually be is up for debate.

  8. Aloy is given her Focus in Lego Horizon Adventures

I've always found the Lego games rather endearing, with their slapstick humour, often eclectic array of blocky setpieces and those wonderfully destructible environments. I challenge you to find me someone who doesn't delight in destroying a once perfectly arranged pile of bricks in the guise of a cannon, tree or anything else really, just for the sheer joy of watching those objects burst into a wave of collectable studs. I bet you can't.

  9. Shadow the black hedgehog holds out his hand with black and red energy

After years of experimenting, Sega has now established two types of 3D Sonic level. The first are the open zones of Sonic Frontiers that give the hedgehog the space and freedom to unleash his speed, the sort of wide open design only possible (just!) on modern hardware. The second are the tightly-focused, mostly linear stages that evolve the side-scrolling original games into 3D rollercoasters with dizzyingly shifting perspectives, a design first popularised in the Sonic Adventure games.

Digital Foundry | Digital Foundry posts more The Last of Us Part 2 PS5 Pro capture

UPDATE: And Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart too.

UPDATE: DF Clips has now been updated with more PS5 Pro capture, this time with more from our Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart session. And do please enjoy the anecdote of completing an entire day of capture on site at Sony HQ, only to find that the Samsung 870 EVO SSD we were using corrupted on the very final shot we took, meaning we had to return the following week with an HDMI 2.1 splitter and two Atomos 4K ProRes recording devices. Both of which worked just fine throughout the day, naturally.

  20. A man stands in a doorway, casting a shadow into a dimly-lit room in Holstin, with the Eurogamer Wishlisted logo in the bottom right corner of the image.

Upcoming horror darling Holstin has had a few demos since it was first announced at the tail end of 2022, which its Steam Next Fest demo handily collates into a single download for you, splitting them into puzzle and combat sequences. Admittedly, I got stuck halfway through the puzzle one, so I booted up its Steam forums to lose a bit of Guides Writer cred in search of the solution - but I was surprised to see so much negativity on show. Some harsh words were thrown at its combat demo in particular, and a little wave of disappointment hit me at the prospect of yet another survival horror game with lacklustre combat. Then, I played the combat demo for myself, and came to a major realisation. Namely, that Holstin's enjoyment will almost certainly depend on how much you still like classic survival horror design, as opposed to how much you think you still like classic survival horror design.

  21. PS5 Pro's PSSR upscaler tested against FSR 3.1 and Nvidia DLSS 3.7 in Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart

Digital Foundry | PS5 Pro's PSSR upscaler tested against FSR 3.1 and Nvidia DLSS 3.7 in Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart

Just one implementation in one game - but the results are compelling.

With PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Sony has joined the machine-learning based image reconstruction race started by Nvidia almost six years ago. At Digital Foundry, we're excited to see this kind of technology reach into the console space and so as part of our recent exclusive PS5 Pro capture opportunity, we spent some time using PS5 Pro and Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart to grab a series of reconstruction-based shots that we know from prior experience truly puts reconstruction technologies through their paces. To what extent can PSSR best the FSR-level technology typically used by consoles? And how close is PSSR to the acknowledged state-of-the-art: Nvidia DLSS?

  22. An angry cartoon man yells while raising his fist and holding a hammer in Antonblast, with the Eurogamer Wishlisted logo in the bottom right corner of the image.

I can't quite decide if Antonblast is destructive genius or just a little bit too chaotic for its own good. Following in Wario's preferred mode of 2D platforming - aka: slamming Anton's thick shoulders, gritted chin and whirling, Taz the Tasmanian Devil-style hurricane legs into every obstacle going rather than a polite bop on the head a la Mario, Antonblast is big on screenshake, exploding paraphernalia and pinballing through levels like a raging battering ram. It's wonderfully frenetic, as the two levels in its Steam Next Fest demo make plain.

Feature | What we've been playing - island puzzles, organisational fun, and hairpin turns

A few of the things that have us hooked this week.

Hello! Welcome back to our regular feature where we write a little bit about some of the games we've been playing over the past few days. We've moved this to a regular Saturday slot to give it a little more time to breathe - appologies if you came looking for it on Friday. This week, we tackle some puzzles while holidaying in a cabin, we go back to a game that had been forgotten about, and try to find some grip during a sharp turn on snow. What have you been playing?
